Management of knee arthrofibrosis
This is the second time we host this course for this very important topic. We believe that these patients can be treated better and get a better quality of life if provided with more up-to-date care. Since this is such an important topic we charge only the amount needed to host the course, hence the very cheap and affordable price.
The course will be held in English, making it viable also for international medical professionals.
Course description
Knee arthrofibrosis (KAF) is an orthopedic complication that can occur following injury or surgery (even minor procedures, such as a partial meniscectomy) in which an exaggerated and uncontrolled inflammatory response leads to excessive and abnormal scar tissue formation, then painful restriction of joint range of motion (ROM).
The aim of this course is to provide the participant with tools and knowledge to better treat these patients.
The course is suitable for:
- Physiotherapists
- Doctors, especially orthopedic surgeons
- Naprapaths
- Chriopractors
Schedule
8:45-9:00 PARTICIPANT REGISTRATION
9:00-10:30 KNEE ARTHROFIBROSIS (KAF)
Etiology, risk factors, primary and secondary arthrofibrosis, classifications and why the latter have no real meaning, scientific background and lack of knowledge in the world of this highly debilitating disease
10:30-11:15 DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS & WHAT REALLY HAPPENS IN THE KNEE
The other confounding pathologies, how to understand if there is an ’active’ cause feeding the ongoing arthrofibrotic process (infection? loosening of a possible prosthesis? other?) the anatomical changes that take place in and out of the knee with KAF, evaluation of the patient, clinical history and diagnostic imaging
11:15-11:30 COFFEE BREAK
11:30 am-13:00 THE FIRST (IMMEDIATE) REACTION IS CRUCIAL
What to do/what not to do, how to implement 1st level rehabilitation strategies, monitoring, how to progress, and understanding when and if pharmacological and/or specialized orthopedic surgeon intervention is needed (practical session)
13:00-14:00 LUNCH BREAK
14:00-15:15 REHABILITATION TECHNIQUES AND DEVICES TO SUPPORT SPECIALIZED REHABILITATION FOR KAF LLPS, over-pressure program, dedicated HEP, devices and how to best replace them when you don’t have them (practical session)
15:15-16:00 SURGICAL TECHNIQUES FOR KAF
When specialist rehabilitation is not enough or the individual case is directly surgical, surgical techniques, trick the knee, no shaver, arthroscopic surgery Vs open, ’salvage procedures’, risks and benefits, implications in rehabilitation (video & image-based session)
16:00-16:15 COFFEE BREAK
16:15-17:00 COMPLICATIONS
Infections, CRPS, deep venous thrombosis, the typical ’U-turn’ after surgery (and what to do immediately in rehabilitation), the ’burden’ of the specialist team, management in rehabilitation (theory & practical session)
17:00-17:30 THE PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECT OF THE KAF PATIENT
The clinician’s management of patients (and families) with a potentially devastating condition
17:30-17:45 THE ”CLINICIAN DEAL”
Accepting upstream the fact that it is an extremely complex disease, that recovery will rarely be complete, but understanding at the same time the enormously impactful role that a specialist team can play in returning the patient to a functional, quality life by increasing his or her chance of recovery
17:45-18:00 Q&A – END OF THE COURSE
Instructor
